The Horizons Program is available to highly and profoundly gifted students whose educational needs require extreme differentiation and acceleration. Students in the Horizons Program require a highly challenging and motivating environment where their special talents and extreme potential can be nurtured.

Currently, the Horizons program services 100 students in grades K-12. Our programs are housed at Barringer Academic Center (grades K-5), Randolph IB Middle School (grades 6-8) and East Mecklenburg High School (grades 9-12).

How do you know if Horizons is right for your child? If most of the following apply to your child, he or she might be a good candidate for the program:

  • works 2-3 grade levels above in writing, math and reading
  • needs cannot be met in the regular TD program
  • scores in the 99 percentile on an standardized psychological assessment (Stanford-Binet, Iowa Test of Basic Skills – given 2 grade levels above)
  • has an IQ in the 145+ range
  • TD teacher recommendation for the program

If you are interested in applying to the Horizons program, please submit your application to the TD Teacher at your elementary school or to your Academic Facilitator (AF) at your middle school. Applications and timelines/procedures can be found here: http://www.cms.k12.nc.us/CMSDEPARTMENTS/CI/ASTD/HORIZONS/Pages/applicationprocess.aspx  (Click on documents for the application form to complete.)
