Advancement Via Individual Determination

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success. AVID targets students in the academic middle range. Students are not only enrolled in their school’s most rigorous classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement, but they are also enrolled in the AVID elective. In this class, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and how to ask probing questions, get academic help from peers and tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make college attainable.

Goals of AVID:

The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle:

  • Will succeed in rigorous curriculum
  • Will complete a rigorous college preparatory path
  • Will enter mainstream activities of the school
  • Will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges
  • Will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society

AVID’s systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase schoolwide/districtwide learning and performance.

The AVID student must have “determination,” the determination to succeed in the demanding course requirements of four year colleges and universities.
